The Regional Press Institute (RPI) is a nonprofit organization of continuing education and training for journalists and media people, with special emphasis on the regional press. The Institute has a membership of representatives from each area of the regional daily press belonging to the Daily Regional Newspapers Association and it is governed according to its charter by a Board of Directors, elected every three years.
Education and training
The Institute is active in the organization of summer schools, seminars, round table discussions, workshops and conferences aimed at publishers, journalists and media people.
It also collaborates with university departments on relevant activities, that provide students with specialization at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
An informal certificate of attendance is granted to all participants. The instructors are distinguished scholars and professionals from Greece and abroad with very high academic and professional credentials.
Applied Research and Studies
This is a medium-term objective that will enable RPI to make a significant contribution to the research and study of the regional daily press, the application of new technologies, the study of changes in the journalistic profession, etc.
Comparative studies between countries and transnational joint research projects are also goals of the Regional Press Institute. For this reason, one of the priorities of the RPI is to develop a European network of partners, able to contribute to research and study.
Organizing events
Another objective of the Institute is to help carry out other activities that are organized by the local community or Greek and foreign universities, always with a view to serving the needs for training and exchange of views. Therefore, the RPI can, under certain conditions, provide its facilities to third parties when such activities are nonprofit and contribute to the development of local communities, as well as training and research.
Facilities
The modern facilities of RPI span an area of 1500 square meters. There are 18 double rooms for accommodation, a conference hall with a capacity of 180 people, a room for round table discussions, a computer room, a library with space for exhibits, and a restaurant. These facilities were renovated in 2009 and are of particularly high standards.
At the institute’s restaurant/cafe there is a photography exhibition of Cretan flora, donated by The Park for the Preservation of Flora and Fauna, of the Technical University of Crete.
